“Play is the work of childhood.”
This is one of my all-time favorite quotes, which comes from psychiatrist Jean Piaget.
I had an easy childhood; one that was safe, fun, and involved A LOT of time outside with friends. In the grand scheme of things, my childhood wasn't even that long ago (I'm not even 30 yet), but so much has changed since then that I worry about letting my boys play in our front yard, as we live on a corner lot and cars tend to push on the gas when turning our corner (versus letting up on it).
While we still play in the backyard quite a bit and are blessed in that we have several parks within walking distance, it was still important to me that our boys had a designated place in the house where they can play, create, and learn, which is where our playroom comes in.
The house we has before this one was a small townhouse (<1,000) and we were going CRAZY with all of our oldest's toys and the lack of places to store them! When we were house hunting a few years ago, one of the biggest selling points for this house in particular was this separate living area, which -- while hidden behind the stairway -- was still perfect, as it is upstairs and we could be in the living room or kitchen while they are playing a few steps away.
